MAISHA BOBA PROGRAM:  Participatory integrated Waste management in

Kigali City

INTRODUCTION

With increase of the population in City of Kigali, there has been a rise of waste amount.

Solid and liquid waste (SLW) are collected from households and transported to Nduba landfill  at the average of around  300 tones par day,  and only 2% of solid waste is recycled and reused,  where ether the transformation and reuse of them should be source of incomes and profit  rather that a burden and environmental and health risks.

ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE MANAGEMENT OF SOLID AND LIQUID WASTE ( MSLW )

  • There is a high level of enrollment of households in all Administrative sectors   in collection and transportation of SLW.
  • 48 Community associations/Cooperatives    and one  Company   are involved in the task collection and the transport of Waste.
  • There is Nduba Landfill where waste are collected
  • Installing incinerator to handle hazardous and infectious waste.

BY  LOVE  AND HOPE BUGINGO:

  • Awareness on use of waste for incomes generating
  • Study trip in Uganda where they use Waste for producing cooking charcoal in Kyaka Refugee camp
  • Training of youth in making charcoal from waste, handling  machineries to and repairing  machineries
  • Training them in business plan entrepreneurship skills
  • Organize them in Cooperative and start producing incomes from waste in in Eastern Province
  • Public awareness on appropriate collection and use of waste

CHALLENGES TO BE ADDRESSED IN KIGALI CITY

  • Lack of participatory and mechanized system  to transform SLW  in source of incomes to the community
  • Failure to manage leachate from unsanitary landfill
  • Inappropriate segregation of solid waste at Nduba site
  • Inappropriate solid and liquid waste disposal
  • Slow pace in expropriating neighboring residents
  • Inappropriate working conditions at landfill site
  • The absence of an inspection area at the landfill site
  • Failure to manage greenhouse gases emitted from the landfill
  • Lack of a national policy regarding LSWM
  • Inadequate planning for MSLW
  • Lack of Solid waste management sensitization
  • Lack of sustainable management system for solid and liquid waste
  • Low rate of recycling for plastic and glass bottles

GOAL

Partnership   of LOVE AND HOPE BUGINGO and  Kigali City to improve waste management practices in Kigali city  through a participatory process where all key stakeholders contribute to developing and implementing actions to reduce domestic waste through practical, cost effective and sustainable methods for generating incomes to the community and maintain the Kigali  City always clean.

OBJECTIVES

  • Establish a system of community awareness and sensitization of waste management
  • Put in place a sustainable Management for Solid and Liquid Waste ( MSLW)
  • Ensure appropriate and profitable way of segregation of solid waste at origin place
  • Put in place business incomes generating by the transformation of solid and liquid Waste in Combustible Charcoal and organic manure
  • Establish an appropriate landfill plan for the non used waste .

OUTCOMES

–  The transformation of waste into energy will not only would solve the problem of the waste but also generates  incomes energy by producing combustible charcoal and organic manure.

– Establishment of a composting  system at low cost which would generate compost manure (fertilizer) from bio-degradable waste.

– Have  a sound system  of   management  of  non used waste  .

Description of Components

1 – Raw material supply: The residues for briquetting should be kept in storage bins or in

bays under shelters that are fully protected from the rain and the run off. The shelters should

be well ventilated to allow any moisture in the raw material to evaporate. The residues can

either be delivered to the start of the Briquetting process manually or by automatic feeders

typically used in the grain and cereal industry.

2 – Inclined screw or elevator: The residues can either be lifted automatically or manually into the hammer mill.

3 – Vibrating Screen: A screen or simple mesh should be fitted over the hammer mill to trap any foreign matter such as over size residues, stones or metals.

4 – Hammer mill: Reduce the particle size to 6 to 8 mm.

5 to 8 – Dryer Set-up: To assist the control of the moisture content of the raw material a dryer is essential.

9 – Intermediate Storage Bin: The residues can be held in a storage bin after leaving the dryer. At least 4 hours of  production capacity should be held in storage in case of a short break down. 10 – Main feed screw: This screw distributes the material in the storage bin to the machines. The supply should be at least 15% greater than production to ensure that none of the machines are starved of ma-terial.Storage bin.

12 – Pre-heater and Furnace: The residues are dropped into a chamber that pre-heats.

11 – Return feed: The excess material not required by the machines is returned to the Inter-mediate

  • – Pre-heater and Furnace: The residues are dropped into a chamber that pre-heats the The temperature should be adjustable from 90 to 200 C depending upon the type and moisture content of the material.
  • – Briquetting Machines: The auxiliary equipment can be sized and matched to supply any number of machines.

Although more than 4 machines may mean that the feed screws become un-necessarily complicated.

  • – Cooling racks: The briquettes are hot after they leave the presses. A system of con-veyors need to be arranged so that the briquettes get time to cool down prior to storage and packing
  • – Ventilation Hoods. The smoke and fumes coming off the hot briquettes should be ex-tracted to the outside of the plant buildings via ducts and hoods closely fitted over the cooling racks.
